Meet the Candidates
Before the midterm elections in November, get to know the candidate running for City Council District 14: Ysabel Jurado, tenants’ rights attorney.
While the Conservancy cannot endorse political candidates, we do provide information to help voters make an informed decision.
Neighborhoods: Downtown, Boyle Heights, Eagle Rock, Highland Park, El Sereno, Garvanza, Glassell Park, Lincoln Heights, and Monterey Hills.

Ysabel Jurado
Ysabel Jurado is a tenants rights attorney, affordable housing activist, single mom, daughter of undocumented Filipino immigrants, lifelong Angeleno, and candidate to become the next Councilmember for District 14. Born and raised in Highland Park, she attended Pasadena City College and put herself through college at UCLA, where she completed her bachelor’s degree. After graduating, she went on to UCLA School of Law, where she graduated with a Juris Doctorate with specializations in Critical Race Studies and the David J. Epstein Program in Public Interest Law and Policy.
She did it all as a single teen mom while raising her daughter, Stella.
As a housing rights attorney and during her work at Bet Tzedek Legal Services, Ysabel fought to stop tenant evictions and stood side by side with community organizations and small businesses that were at risk of losing their leases. Her practice has focused in particular on building pathways to home-ownership for communities of color, the preservation of open space, and reparative justice.
Ysabel is running for District 14 because she understands the immense powers the City Council holds in Los Angeles – and has watched local representatives betray her community time and again. Her platform focuses on expanding affordable housing, ending homelessness, supporting small businesses, tackling the climate crisis, and building a more just economy for all.
