From YMCA to HOME: The Adaptive Reuse of Harbor House

About This Event

Join us on November 16, 2024, at San Pedro’s historic Harbor House for a special tour and panel discussion as we kick off the L.A. Conservancy’s new multi-year campaign—HOME!

HOME stands for Housing, Opportunity, Mobility, and Equity.

Our HOME campaign will showcase new ideas and strategies for preservation to meet the needs of Los Angeles. And we’re starting with the stunning adaptive reuse of the Harbor House in San Pedro! From YMCA to army hotel to apartment living, this beautiful Spanish Colonial Revival landmark demonstrates how historic buildings can be repurposed to serve the community.

TOUR | From YMCA to HOME: The Adaptive Reuse of Harbor House
Take an exclusive tour of Harbor House overlooking the Port of Los Angeles. Built in 1926 as the Army and Navy YMCA to serve San Pedro’s military personnel, it was heavily used during World War II before serving as a longtime transitional housing facility. Through adaptive reuse, Harbor House has undergone an exciting transformation, including restoring original features and reimagining areas for modern living.

FREE PANEL DISCUSSION | HOME: Adaptive Reuse and Preservation’s Broader Role in Housing
We’re hosting a compelling panel discussion featuring experts in architecture, development, affordable housing, preservation advocacy, and beyond. Too often, historic preservation is portrayed as an impediment in the way of progress when it comes to providing much-needed housing in Los Angeles. But, places like Harbor House are proof that retaining and rehabilitating older buildings can do just the opposite.

We hope you join us as we build on L.A.’s heritage to meet the moment.
