Los Angeles County is a vast area of cities, each of which has individual neighborhoods rich in their own unique character and history.

The Los Angeles Conservancy works closely with community members, city staffs, and elected officials to help ensure that our historic neighborhoods keep the qualities that make them special and enhance quality of life for residents and visitors.

Of the eighty-nine jurisdictions (eighty-eight cities and the County itself) in Los Angeles County, only seventeen cities have historic districts designated and/or protected by local review. Only twenty-three have the ability to create them.

HPOZ Preservation Plans Adopted

In December 2010, the Los Angeles City Planning Commission approved preservation plans for sixteen Historic Preservation Overlay Zones (HPOZs). For the first time, all of the city’s HPOZs have clear guidelines for protecting their unique character. For general information about the process, visit the Office of Historic Resources website. For the plans themselves and HPOZ news, visit the Office of Historic Resources HPOZ blog.

This section highlights the historic districts designated locally throughout the county. It also offers resources for people who live in historic districts or are interested in creating one. It does not include National Register or California Register districts.

We encourage you to explore these unique communities and to urge your city to create meaningful protections for historic neighborhoods if none currently exist.

For more information about specific historic districts, please contact the city planning department in which the district is located.

Angelino Heights

One of L.A.'s first suburbs, the hilltop residential area of Angelino Heights lies two miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles, near the communities of Echo Park and Silver Lake. The area was planned as a respectable, genteel Victorian suburb for Los Angeles' late 19th-century upper-middle class. The first designated HPOZ in the city, Angelino Heights contains some of the best remaining examples of Victorian architecture in Los Angeles, as well as later examples of the Craftsman and Mission Revival styles. The 1300 block of Carroll Avenue is listed as a historic district in the National Register of Historic Places and contains the highest concentration of 19th-century Victorian homes in all of Los Angeles.
