Broadway Initiative Projects
Strategic Direction and Technical Assistance
- Bringing Back Broadway: Participation in the new "Bringing Back Broadway" public-private partnership between the city and property owners.
- Advocating and supporting legislation to foster revitalization, from 1999's Adaptive Reuse Ordinance (which eased the process of transforming vacant, mostly historic downtown buildings into housing) to 2007's City Council motion to facilitate affordable parking for entertainment venues.
- Historic Downtown Los Angeles Design Guidelines : Easy-to-use guidelines for historically sensitive design of new and existing structures in the area, including storefronts and signage; created in 2002 with extensive community participation.
- Historic Broadway Façade Rehabilitation Program: More than $1 million awarded in 2004-5 to enhance the visual and historic character of buildings in the Broadway National Register Historic District, including the Chester Williams Building (452 S. Broadway) and the Ninth & Broadway Building (850 S. Broadway).
- Securing public-sector funding to support physical revitalization and private investment, including city, state, and federal monies.
- Building and strengthening relationships with property owners, business improvement districts, and other downtown partners.
- Facilitating key development and rehabilitation projects.
- As-needed guidance on financing programs, planning and building regulations, expert consultants, and helpful contacts.
Marketing, Promotion, and Education
- Broadway Historic Theatre District Promotion: Promoting the historic theatres of Broadway to presenters and producers; partnering with arts and entertainment organizations to expand cultural programming in the district, and highlighting these unique resources through events such as our annual Last Remaining Seats film series. With a dozen theatres between Third Street and Olympic Boulevard, Broadway has the highest concentration of pre-World War II theatres in the world; the area is the first and largest historic theatre district listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
- Small Business Workshops: Workshops for new and prospective businesses in the area, highlighting economic incentives, practical tips, and resources.
- Educational Tours: Weekly walking tours of the Broadway Historic Theatre District; numerous tours for lenders and the public highlighting the unique living spaces in converted historic buildings; and special tours showcasing the area to hundreds of people in a day, from 2003's "Broadway Behind-the-Scenes" to 2007's "Mainly Main."
- Shop Broadway: A shopping guide promoting the unique products, stores, and places on Broadway.
- Kids' Guide to Broadway: A bilingual guide (Spanish and English) for exploring the history and excitement of Broadway, with additional online activities for kids, parents, and teachers.
